So I ran into this problem and I cant locate the problem. The engine is knocking like crazy and I'm clueless as to what it could be. I think the sound is coming from the timing belt but is this a known issue?

Specs:'91 240sx SE CoupeKA24DE 160k Miles

Here is a link to the video clip including the audio so you can hear what I am.

I changed the spark plugs, flushed the engine and changed the oil + oil filter. Anyone have ideas on what this possibly could be?

edit: changed video hosting to youtube

Here's what you need to do first. Get a oil pan removal knife (trust me its HELPS!!!) and a tube of some silicone gasket. Drop the pan. Check all rods for play. I had a powdered bearing in the sludge in the pan after I checked. I had a louder knock though. Both bearings were toast on one rod.

If all checks out ok...put it back together...then you can see if its a rod.

Mine sounded like it was coming from the timing chain area too...it was cyl. 1

But....thats my story...Yours sounds like it COULD be the timing chain due to the frequency and strength of the noise made.

Pull the valve cover and the timing chain covers and inspect.

And yes the chains do wear out over time, cold starts, and general abuse. also check the chain guides....DONT BUY AN AFTERMARKET REPLACEMENT. ONLY BUY OEM CHAIN GUIDES!!!by the way...

Good luck...keep us posted.
