Engine knock

hi everybody, I have a question which I have been thinking of over the last few days.

my question is: can I tell, depending on the type of engine knock and when and how often it happens, whether its a rod knock or otherwise. I fairly know that there are several causes, some inside the engine and some outside it.

It takes a trained ear to know what and where the noise is coming from. Noises are the most difficult things to diagnose because there are so many moving parts on the car.
