Gas grade? Are you using premium? Crapy gas.

A loud ticking sound. When i get home I will do a sound clip of it. I have used Premium gas ever since gas has come down from $5

One thing not to overlook are the various pumps such as water pump and oil pump. In the case of a water pump the noise will often sound like ball bearings. This can be caused for example when the pump suddenly speeds up. At the eye of the pump the pressure will be reduced and the water will flash only to instantly condense. Air in the system will also have a similar sound to it. Oil pumps will also make noises that some describe as 'ticking' although usually very different and distinctive.

Now one that you may not have thought off and this is more common if you have not recently had an oil change or you did and you used a cheap oil filter. The bypass valve in the filter may be lifting under acceleration and this noise is often referred to as 'chatter'. In this case purchase a new high quality oil filter such as the OEM Nissan, Mobile 1, etc. and install it.

Many of these noises will be hard to separate by yourself unless they show up without the need to actually drive the car down the road. Use a short hose as a listening device and have a friend run the gas pedal while you try to pick up the source.

My experience with California premium gas is that I get a certain amount of engine pinging upon take off no matter where I buy my fuel. It's annoying but its 10x worse if I don't use premium.

most certanly check your oil filter i know every one thinks that fram filters are good but they are very restrictive and have a profound oil pressure drop in the top end of a motor take your fram filter and beat a honda with it go oem or something difrent

Thanks Perry, that was very helpful. I get my oil changed at a very respectable place here (z1motorsports), and I tell them to put what they recommend all the time and that is castrol and a nissan filter. I'll have to get somebody to drive my car, and I'll record it when i return home Saturday.

Thanks guys,Chris

In the case of a water pump pay attention to the water level. If you see something that alarms you in regard to level changed don't instantly freak out thinking you have a head gasket leak when you could have a water pump seal leak. Often times a seal will allow air to be drawn in without pushing any water out. The eye of a centrifugal pump can be at a very low pressure compared to the outlet, enough so that air can be drawn in. It is also possible that you simply have air in the system that needs to be vented.

Hope it is something simple.

Don't overlook the possibility of the axels clicking. Is it always from a stand still?

They sometimes need to be packed with grease, good luck.

Sometimes what sounds like my axels click when i'm in 1st gear and i accelerate then let off of the gas it clicks. But sorry i wasn't really clear when i said when i accelerate in my OP, it's usually when i accelerate pretty hard, but not WOT.

Sorry, I just read my last post, and it didn't really make sense. It sounds like my axel is clicking when I accelerate then slow down in 1st gear. The "Engine Knock" only occurs when I accelerate pretty hard.

Thanks,Chris

If it is an acceration issue base more on severity than on rpm then it very well sounds like it is possibly fuel related.

Most of the issues I mentioned are very real but will usually show up regardless of loading. They are influenced by temperature. For example the noisy water pump issue I mentioned will need to have the water at a warm enough temperature to flash to steam at the pressure present in the eye of the pump. Cold oil versus warm oil will influence when the bypass valve in a poorly designed oil filter will chatter.

Some have reported noisy water thermostats which I didn't mention, another item possibly to pay attention to, but that noise usually goes away on a hot engine with an open thermostat.
