i hear that the timing chain guide rattling is really common with this engine, and I JUST completed my 5 speed swap and the engine started rattling near the front of the valve cover (at least thats where i think its coming from). There was no noise before the swap, if that matters. I don't know what this rattle sounds like, but I have a video of the engine running. Help please? Thanks!

Sounds like the timing chain guides to me, it also could be that your oil pump is old, the timing chain tensioner works with the oil pressure so if u have low oild pressure it creates more slack in the chain.

I dont have the most experience, so i would wait for a few more replys.

thanks! i was thinking its the timing chain guide... my dad and i are gonna take it out tomorrow and hopefully thats it. my dad thought it was the oil pump also, but we're still gonna take out the timing chain guides. Hopefully we don't mess anything up. we're not really mechanics lol

i took out the tension chain guides, and felt that the tensioner was kind of stuck so we took it out and kept pumping it. it became looser and was able to move freely. we put it back and put all the covers back on. we started it it and we were all happy cuz there was no more sound. 3 minutes later it slowly came back... refer to the vid on my first post to hear the rattling. help please! i only have a few more days before my dad's vacation ends and my school starts to fix it

well i got a whole timing chain overhaul kit it came with new chains, guides and tensioners. it didn't come with the upper ones though. i put them on and it runs PERFECTLY now. hopefully it stays that way. both my tensioners were bad so there was a lot of slack on the chains

I had that exact same sound coming from the front of the value cover. I also heard the same thing, taking off the chains guides will help. So when I replaced the value cover gaskets, I remover only the top front guide. I notice that there was 4 rub marks from the edges of the guide rubbing on the under side of the value cover. The sound almost completely went away, the only time I heard it was when my car would be in between like 900-1200 rpms. The sound was also a lot more faint, I could really only hear it while the hood was open. So that would be my suggestion, take off just the one.
