What's it mean when the engine head is cracked?

And how costly would it be to repair?

theres a hairline [maybe worse] fracture in the head.

depending on location and severity, you may want to replace the engine, or just get the head looked at. it may be possible to have the crack machined out unless its deeper than a few thousanths.

new head or new engine.

if the engine has high mileage [150k+] you will probably be better off replacing the engine.

Yep. If you have a crack in the head, you have to wonder how/why that happened. Did it overheat? Was it overstressed? I would pass on the risk.

depends how cheap they want to sell it. you might be able to jsut get a spare head to get put on for about $500 or so depending on the shop. or maybe get a newer engine for about $500 plus maybe $500+ to have the engine installed.

thats why i would just replace the motor. you never know why it cracked in the first place.

cracking a head usually requires some sort of abuse/major overheat.
