Got a 1993 maxima with 50,000 from a old guy. Its primo except for 2 things.

1. No power at take off! Engine bogs and runs ruff at idle. However, on the freeway it runs great!!

2. When I put the car in drive the transmission dosent engage right away. When it does however it shifts just fine..

I would suggest doing a complete maintenance overhaul on the car. 50k on a '93 is hardly anything. I'd suspect that the fuel filter, plugs etc need replacement just due to age and lack of use. Try replacing some of that stuff, maybe run a can of fuel system cleaner through it (I like BG44) and see what that does for it.

I agree give her some TLC!!! haha replace everything, plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, maybe a oil change/oil filter if not done recently, you know just general maintence. as for the transmission not enganing all the way, check your clutch pedal free play (i. e. measure the distant from normal position till you feel resistants, a good rule of thumb is 1-3 inches) if its off adjust your pedal linkage, or bleed your clutch

I forsee only one problem with adjusting his clutch. It might be an automatic, so therefore, no clutch.

If it is an Auto, check your trans fluid level. If the fluid is low, add some. If the fluid is a dark color, I'd suggest doing a drain and fill on the transmission.

1. I changed the spark plugs and the spark plugs had TONS of BLACK Carbon buildup on them. The car runs a little better now.

2. I adjusted the timing. It was off. The car now runs MUCH better. More power now.

3 I did a code read from the ECM and I get number 55.

However, the car still runs ruff at idle and runs rich. And it still eats a little too much gas. I can smell it in the exhaust. BTW, the car has new cap, rotor, wires, and plugs.

It quite likely needs a new o2 sensor as well.
