OK, So my oil pump failed and I spun a couple main bearings... The #1 Bearing is fine #2 Completely gone #3 Tore up, but still there.. 4# Bearing is fine... The rod bearings all seemed ok. Piston walls looked fine and the pistons themselves looked fine. However there seems to be metal shavings throughout the entire oil system. Knowing this I'm assuming the crank, and rods are toast for sure. I don't know if the valvetrain was damaged at all, but there were shavings in the head....

My qusetion is this. What should I do with this motor?!? I am not made of money, keep in mind. NO TODA/HKS stroker kits for me....Should I build it up with OEM? Bulid it up with some aftermarket? Plain out junk it? Lets say I have about 2-3K to play with. What do you guys suggest? Its a REDTOP BTW.

How much would a swap cost?

First Question: How did your oil pump fail? Its directly drivin off the crank. Was your lower oil pan crushed? If so that can hinder oil supply and cause you to spin bearings.

Oil pumps sometimes just die... it's the same with water pumps.

Water pumps dont die they fail and leak(the bearings can fail too do to age or an over tightened belt). Ive never heard of an Oil pump just dieing per se. There had to be an underlying cause...Sludge or a chrushed oil pan or perhaps the pressure bypass got fouled and held open. But if that engine is running the pump is spining. The oil pump on the SR20 is probably one of the most bullit proof parts on the car.

TerryIve got two of these in my garage at various stages of assembly.

Honestly I'm kinda wondering that myself... either way something in his oil delivery failed. Low oil, blocked passage, worn pump, something caused the bearings to go.

in your case, i would probably do a swap, and then possibly part out unaffected components of the old engine to recoup some of your costs.

sorry to hear about it, a pretty rare failure as far as i know.

I have seen a water pump failure. It was on a Ford. The blades on the impeller had completely corroded off. It frothed the coolant but I don't think it pumped a drop. There is a lesson in there about changing your antifreeze every once in a while.

water and oil pumps can say bye bye just like anything else.

do you know a real good shop? if the piston walls look good, it's a good possibility the engine can be saved. it's just going to take a complete teardown, clean up, and inspection.

my suggestion would be save usefull parts for future and cut your losses. a build up would be cool but price is up there. just a crank is some serious dough. get another motor. just the engine should be alot cheaper than a clip or motorset. im thinkin like 1500. all those extra parts would be great to have around.
