I changed the oil and the fuel filter and meanwhile the battery died. When I finally managed to get a new battery in there (trunk mounted just recently as well), the car would crank but not start up.

I checked out the spark plugs and they have fuel on them.

So we decided to try and start the car with a spark plug out to see if it was firing. They only fired once out of about 4 cranks:confused:

I have never had an engine flood so I am not really sure of the steps to take to fix it.

Do I just let it sit? Do I have to buy new spark plugs?

Could it be a different problem altogether?

Thanks

take all the spark plugs out, and let the fuel evaporate

ok we tried that but only for about an hour. Now the engine has been sitting overnight...

So what caused this so I can avoid it in the future?

Some how you are not getting spark to ignite ,double check all your ignition system components. I see that you have fuel but not enough spark, if you have questions call me...

Well it turns out the previous owner installed the fuel pump in a horribly ghetto manner, with some really crappy butt crimp connectors on the wires instead of just soldering it. The positive wire in the fuel tank came apart completely, so there was no power going to the pump.

So the fuel pump was not working at all, and that was the problem all along.

Thanks for the offers of help, and for the advice. I really appreciate you offering to let me call you at your place of business Derek, and I was very close of taking you up on it.

so the lesson for today: dont use crappy *** butt connectors for important engine components. Solder, or use a high quality crimp connectors (with the proper tool!) and then shrink wrap.
