I have a ka24de with a bad head, I want to rebuild it. After I rebuild it, how do I test it? Is there some kind of machine that will help me start it and monitor it? I know about compression tests and I know how to crank an engine over by applying voltage to the starter, but to get it to fire and run ? Do I use an ECM? Any help would be appreciated.

best thing to do would be a compression test to everything is sealed up properly. you will need the ecm to get the car to run. check and double check you have your timing setup properly, if you mess that up you might hit your valves on the piston. to check for that i would take a breaker bar and turn the engine over on the crank pulley (with spark plugs removed) to make sure you dont have any valve strikes then do the compression test, check for oil pressure, and then fire it up.

After your build is finished, you can try to locate a facility that has an engine dyno, and run it from there. Expensive though.
