Just wondering how long an average 1G 240sx sohc engine lasts. In a little bit of a tiff with a friend here, seems he thinks that mazda engine last longer. Of course he so happens to be driving a 1996 Ford Probe GT, so he's gonna side there.

it all depends on how well it is taken care of, if the oil is changed on a regular basis on time, how hard it is driven, many things can decide the life expectancy, but i know some people have gotten there ka's to over 300k (i think)

My daily driver was at I think 178k without a rebuild when I sold it. And while I made sure it had good oil and never redlined it while I had it, I was no grandma either. If taken care of, they're rock solid.

k, cus I am in the market for a 240, but the only ones in my price range are nearing the 300,000 mark, what could i do to ensure that if I bought one of these, the engines would last me another 100,000?

What are you using to buy a 240? change from your ashtray?

People are getting 240's for next to nothing (any many free) with much less milage.

I'd have to say 240s that are nearing 300,000 miles are selling for a certain price for reason. Better to hold out and pay for some more with fewer miles, assuming its been well taken care of.

I think the mazda engine will last longer, My friend has a 95 escort GT, it need a 5-speed trans right now. But if normal wear items were replaced on time such as timing chain guides, so they don't clog the oil return. I can see the KA SOHC lasting well over 250K.

How cheap would you say for a 89 that needs nothing or next to nothing for safety? I've seen a few for around $1,500 CAD. Just wondering how good of a deal that would be.

im on the exact opposite of the spectrum, picked 89 fastback up for 3k with 73000 miles on it, i would say probably around there, maybe even a little lower for a car hanging on the edge

I believe its all abotu how well a car has been taken care of. Mileage speaks little for the life expectancy for the engine. Theres too many other factors out there that effect longevity

how about the DOHC?

i think a daily driven ka24 with the occasional spirited driving is near bulletproof. =)
