whenever i would get off an offramp from the freeway, and brake to a stop, my engine would die. example: i am cruising around 60mph going into the offramp, i would brake and press the clutch and shift into neutral, then my RPM's would go down dramatically, almost to 0, then my engine would die, then while my car is still in motion, i would start my car, why is my car doing that... it's scary at times... because my brakes would be harder to push than when the car is on, and this only happens when i'm in 5th gear downshifting to neutral from high speeds

ive noticed that if i ever drop into neutral from a high speed, mine will want to die-sometimes does. but that could maybe be bov related, id say its not overly uncommon, just downshift while braking or tap the pedal, i always downshift so i dont have the prob that often

Why would you ever attempt to stop you car without downshifting do you enjoy eating brake pads, let the engine help,,,it wants toWhy cant you just downshift into fourthy. When you car is just idling and you press the brake hard do the rpms drop, id bet they do. With you engine deaccelerating and the alternating putting out less power as the rpms drop the iac isnt able to catch the throttle, plus the braking puts even more pressure on the engine........................just stop shifting into neutral

some peeps are anti downshift, my friend says its cheaper/eassier to replace brake pads compared to engine/transmission parts. i say hes stupid

Me too, the transmission takes no extra strain under engine breaking than it does from anything else. Hard acceleration would be m,uch more devastating than engine braking would be
