Posted this in the Z forum, but nobody seems to know the answer. Does anybody here know how the extra 50+ horsepower for the Z is extracted from the 3.5L engine, compared to the Maxima? Is it a programming or hardware difference?

It's going to be a computer program difference. The Z is a performance oriented car while the Maxima is designed to be performance influenced.

The Maxima's transverse layout also means the exhaust system is more restrictive than the Z's. The Z's intake manifold is probably a factor as well.

However, it also depends on which year of Z you're talking about.Z's since 2007 have a totally different, newer variant of the VQ (the VQ35HR) that's got a stronger focus on high-RPM power and attempts to alleviate some of the prior VQ's "wheeziness" toward redline. It also sacrifices torque to do this, though. The same VQ-HR is also found in the G35 and G37.

External features (such as accessory mounting points, etc.) are also different between the Z and Max motors.

Thanks for the help, guys. I figured it wasn't anything dramatic. I'm pretty much satisfied with the performance of my Maxima SE, but was just wondering about the differences.
