engine dies

Periodically comments have been made about this, but I've never seen the solution. Hopefully, someone can help me.

At wide open throttle, invariably trying to pass someone, my '90 240sx dies. Downshifting seems to fix this, but it happens in 3rd, 4th and 5th. This is at about 3000 - 3500 rpm...not near any rev limiter. All electrics, etc. continue to work, the engine just dies. Engine cold, engine warm there is no difference.

As you can probably imagine, it is quite interesting when I try to quickly pass someone going 40 mph and the engine dies.

thanks.

(oldgeez is me..."driving mom's car" I have no idea what that is...my mother never owned a car, and never drove...oh well.)

Have you checked the ECU for an error code?

Check your engine grounding wire to make sure it is okay. Resistance between your block and negative battery cable should be less than 3 ohms. Check your injectors (make sure they are at less than 15 ohms. Your fuel pump could be dying out. Does this happen above the RPM range you are talking about? or is it just through this range? also check your Fuel pressure, and fuel regulator.

There are also the emissions devices, the EGR and BPT, and the device that makes sure you have positive pressure in your exhaust (I forget the name at the moment)

Forgot to add... just spray some carb cleaner in there and clean it out.

to wiwalsh...Have not checked the ecu lately, but was in there a while back for another reason (while I had the problem) and there were no errors...will recheck though. Seems to be only in this range and not 100% of the time, but way too frequent to tolerate.

to Nismo_Freak, thanks for the info.

I appreciate both of your ideas, and will try them this weekend.

thanks again.
