Hey there everybody, I have a very serious problem, my engine is currently dead. Here's some background- My car has 167000 miles on the engine and has always had a small smoke problem. A few days ago, it started to smoke much worse, a constant white trail of smoke could be seen coming from the car at all times and I thought that maybe there was a small oil leak. Today, driving down the road, the car lets out a terrible high pitched squeak and I immediately press the clutch, at which point the engine completely dies and begins smoking white. I stop, try to start the car again, it turns over and immediately shuts off again, more white smoke comes off the bottom of the engine block, does anybody know what happened?

White smoke is usually buring coolant. You say it always had a smoking problem, was it always from the engine, or the tailpipe?

Can you say... seized motor.

Got Oil?

Sounds like your piston rings were dying and you drove long enough to burn off all your oil.

Check the sump for oil.

Either that or...you've got a cracked cylinder (or blown/leaky head gasket) and you've been leaking coolant into the combustion chamber since the beganing and now your running the popular "coffee and cream" mix in your engine; basically VERY watered down oil. I seen this happen and that could seize a motor after a short while.

OR, You could have snapped your timing chain.

A snapped timing chain would not cause him to have a trail of smoke for some time to only get worse once the car dies :)

Blown head gasket? It was leaking coolant into your oil all the while and eventually gave way to more copious amounts?

White smoke like you stated usually indicates head gasket. do as stated earlier, check your oil and see if its milky looking....or if theres any at all :)
