engine cutting out at 4k in a 86 200sx

i just bought an 1986 200sx 5 speed with the 2L engine, love it, but recently when in 2nd or above gear, the engine losses all power at 4k or under heavy accel. it's almost like the engine dies, but it's still running, and is the pedal is in the right place, it is like the engine cuts out, then comes back on completely, then cuts out, then full on, it's really odd, and no matter what i do outside of really really slow accelration past 4k, the engine does this a least a little bit. any suggestions or ideas what it might be?

if its the 8 plug system check your cap and your rotor closely. those old 8 plug rotrs used to burn through to the shaft causeing an irratic fire pattern under heavy accel.

will do. i read someplace else about the same thing, something about only firing on 4 of the plugs about 4k then engaging the the other 4 under load. they mentioned the coils as well. thnx for the input, i'll see if that fixes things.

that fixed the problem. i only replaced the cap, the rotor autozone had didn't fit correctly, the collar on it was too long from edge to screw hole, so i just took some emery cloth and cleaned the contacts on the old one till i can find on that fits. think it was JP971 or something for the rotor, and 972 for the cap (could be wrong on the JP part) if anyone has a part number of one that will fit, let me know.
