Finally done, after a long week of rain over here it took a bit for me to get it done (humid and low temp not recommended for painting)
Explanation of my pics
1. Degrease, get all the gunk thats been clinging on the cover over the past years. let it sit for about 15 mins and rinse off to dry.
2. Dried and wipe down (faster process is to use a heat gun on light or a blow dryer whichever is convenient) and remove plastic emblem. as you can see there are 4 holes that are plastic rivits, i ended up breaking 2 off in the process.
3. Mask all black plastic that is not going to be painted
4. Me cutting out the letters for the V8 4.5 that was a pain in the but, took about 20+ mins or so to be precise about it
5. Primer 3 coats - i used the sandable primer as a noob to painting i didn't believe i could get it right the first time. Yes mistakes did happen during the progress so its was easy to let it sit out to dry and wet sand it smooth if you got overspray.
6. Colorshift paint (more coats the more effects) i went with 5 coats to give it a good effect ( Btw those cans aren't cheap, $21.99 to be exact - yes for 1 can) I got them at Autozone (only place i could find it individually, Home Depot sells by the case where you can order but it was like $125 - after laying 5 layers of paint i used a satin clear coat for an extra gloss/shine, i put on 3 coats of that and also 3 coats of high temp clear to keep it from melting/burning off in the engine bay.
7. Pics of progress after the 5 coat
8. Engine letters up close with 5 coats
9. Different lighting for effects
10. Test look in engine bay
11. Typically after laying so many coats of various paints, you get a build up on the edges. I used a box knife to cut along the edges so i don't peel and mess up the paint.
12. Etching out the letters was such a pain, especially between "4.5" that was carefully etched around the edges of the letters (about another 20 mins)
13. Peeling off all the masking tape left some residue from the tape on the black edges where i covered up. I used Mothers Back to black to give it back its shine
