this is for all of the people out there who don't understand what a 2JZ engine really is.

I'm sure this has been posted before, but it's alway nice to have a healthy reminder for people who are in the grey about engine codes from other manufacturers like I am.

actually, here's a better article (sorry dave!) It includes the Mitsu engine codes, except for the 4G94 (current 2.0L powerplant of the USDM lancers) and the new 4G69 which is the 2.0 MIVEC used on the USDM Lancer Ralliarts.

I was trying to find the autospeed article, but realized I had the SCC article bookmarked. Then I went looking for Mitsu codes on EvoM.net and found the autospeed article. Much better.

Wasnt the 4G69 the same as the one in the FTO? Dont feel like searching at this moment.

The G69 is a G94 block with a different deck and a MIVEC head on it. FTO's have three engine options (from what I know of) A V-6 MIVEC, a V-6 non-MIVEC, and a 1.8L I4 non-MIVEC.

I think the code for it is 6A12 (from what I found on EvoM)

EDIT: I don't know what the A stands for. It's a common misconception to interperet the G as "Generation", but Mitsu has a D series family that stands for Diesel, so I believe the G stands for Gasoline.

The EVO still uses the 4G63 right?

" while the SR20VE has no turbo, but uses variable valve timing. (Not all variable valve timing engines get a V, however.)"

Poor dave colman, he can never live up to my geekyness with nissan motors. The SR20VE does not use variable valve timing, it uses variable valve lift, all engines with variable valve lift have V in the engine code, all engines with variable valve timing are not indicated so in the engine code.

dave considered the Mitsu engine codes unbreakable, when the code has never been hidden as far as i've known. then again, his article was written in '99, so back then, VVL might have been mistaken for VVT. I've been into cars for a while, but only recently have I gained knowledge as to what VVT is and how it works

So you're saying Nissan's Neo VVL doesn't employ VVT aswell as VVL?

nope, i reseached extensively the SR20VE/SR16VE/SR20VET, i even spoke to a few SR20 parts stores, the motor does not have variable valve timing, only variable valve lift. The s14/s15 SR20DET and Q45 VQ45DE both have variable valve timining, yet no V in the engine code.

Is there a reason for not having both Timing and Lift Variability in one head? Too expensive? Too difficult to design? Does the famed VTEC have both?

My guess would be production costs. On an interesting note, nissan has been developing variable crank stroke on the good ol' SR20 platform.

I love the look on peoples faces when i whip out Nissan engine codes...people look like your speaking greek. You could seriously pull any random combination of letters and numbers and people would believe you.

What exactly would be the advantage of Stroke Variability? A long stroke down low for good torque delivery but lesser stroke at higher RPMs? Seeing as HP is a factor or TQ and RPMs, do they plan to compensate for the loss of effective displacement with better flow and cam characteristics later in the RPM band?

i wanna know how they can do this without stressing the crank too much. i'm afraid a system like this will spin bearings too fast

It variable compression ratio actually (my bad), but it still involves an additional mechanism attached to the crank. Its really cool looking, i wish i could find some pictures for you guys.

I also belive volvo has done a system like this too.

Unfortunatly they have abondoned the RWD SR20, all current production SR's are transverse (either FWD or AWD).

but it's still gonna be a transverse SR. If it were a Latteral SR with a GT-R style AWD, that would be nice
