Its an '89 240 with about 150 miles on the KA24E. It was running good, no oil burning except it needed a timing chain. So i got it replaced but the shop timed it completely wrong, apparantly the engine was pinging, then went into limp mode and was hardly running. I took it into the dealership where they charged me $300 to re-time everything properly. Now the engine burns a lot of oil, about 1 litre every week and a half, and when revs over 3500 you can hear a clicking noise coming from the engine, and the ticking increases as the revs do, but not a rattling like the timing chain, possibly my valves? The dealership says that having the timing screwed up could have no way made it burn oil. But it went from burning nothing to a hell of a lot. Any theories of what it could be??? :help

is it possible that when you drove it with the timing way off, some valves hit the cylinder heads?

It is possible, I drove it out of town when I first picked it up and then all the way back, so it was driven for a while with the timing way off. I didnt really have a choice at the time.

if you were pinging bad, then damage may have been done and caused oil consumption.

Did they do a compression test? If not, you really need to do one or have it done. Pinging that bad, it may have burn't a piston, cracked a ring or shattered a spark plug porcelin (as well as those things posted above) all of which could cause excessive oil to be burned, this is based on it burnin' it out the exhaust system, hope I'm understanding that correctly. Leaning towards a cracked ring, what I think you may be hearing is the piston "kissing" the cylinder wall as this would tend to become more pronouced as rev's increase (could be valves/followers though too). Really didn't want to tell you that, being a chebby hater and all. Personally, I don't think I would drive it until I found out for sure what the problem is. If you have to, keep the rev's down but don't bog it. Keep the damage to a minimum if it is a major problem. One other quick thing for Ya, pull the plugs, if you find 3 clean and one black and oily, you got the problem cyclinder, this won't tell you anything more than that though without pulling the head I'm sorry to say.
