Engine Break-In Period

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

In the past I'v pushed cars, never really thought of breaking it in so I figured I'd ask, how bad is it if you race an engine (floor it) like about 2-3 times. How bad is it for the engine if it has 40 miles? Is this a longterm or shortterm affect on the car and what are the end results (lets say if you were not to do it again, and drive it under 3000-3500 rpms as usual since I purchased the car). Someone recommended me to drive it slow for the first 5000miles, I drive on the highway a lot so I did like floor it to race up to get inbetween traffic in NY. Should I be paranoid that I just beat on my new car with less than 45 miles on it (Very paranoid about every little thing on my new car)? Should I be worried that I floored it, I could literally count 3 times I raced the engine to get a feel of it tonight, but prior to that, I have never been above 3500 rpms. Sorry if I sound repetitive but it really upsets me, and wasn't thinking (way back from work, longday, needed to get home). If someone says its not good for your engine and is really bad to floor a new engine, I start loosing my head lol.

Any feedback and advise would be kindly appreciated!

1) you should be okay relax2) the only reason tehre is a break in period is so that everything seals tightly and that your engine is conditioned well for the next "X" years you use it - so on that note if you WOT everyday, then yea, regardless of what you do you'll be doing repairs in no time.3) there is no where in NY that requires you to drive like an a** anywhere. If you care that much about your car, then dont weave all over the place. I don't care how tired/stressed you are being stuck on the LIE, GCP, VWE, BQE for 2-3 hours.....it's a good car, take care of it, and there are thousands of us that are stuck in traffic too, just relax and chill out

i think you should be paranoid about how you drive not what you've done. For the rings to have a proper seal.... yea keep it under 3500 RPMs for the first 5k, do you have to do that exactly probably no....but why risk it, it's not hard to, this car picks up very well.

Honestly, I don't drive fast. Usually I drive like an old lady, and for that reason I'm paranoid that I floored it. Basically I'm going to do it again and hoping this one time it didn't too much harm. And yeah, its really soft acceleration, feels like butter lol.

Well, thanks for the info.

Don't know where you see 5000 mile break in period?

My book says...1200 mile breakin and keep it under 4000 rpm.

My dealer stated that the engines are broken in at the factory and don't need babying the way engines used to beyond being careful to not keep the rpm's at a constant for the first several thousand miles. This means no long highway trips with the car settled in at a certain speed for hours on end. Other than that, he said no problem. I've taken the part about not keeping the rpm's constant for very long to heart because it made sense. However, even with the statement on not worrying about pushing the engine at a young age, I have been more careful with the rpm's than I will be in a few months. I've pushed it to close to 6,000 a few times while in pseudo-manual "sport" mode but not often at all and not into the "screaming" end. Ive also never floored it, pedal to the metal, for more than a second or two, and don't intend to until it has at least 2 to 3,000 miles on the odometer.

To be honest, there isn't a "manual mode" out there that compares to a true manual transmission and I really miss having a manual transmission in a car this capable. This one is OK but only OK and I've settled into almost always using either standard drive or the sport mode without the manual option. Both of these make sure to keep the shift points well within tolerances and, especially considering the non-flooring part, I don't have to worry about it.
