Ever since I got the car around last year I noticed engine braking is felt in 2nd gear while left in D. I'm not sure if this is normal. Like when you are say crusing to a redlight and foot off the gas pedal you can fell the engine braking in 2nd and then it lets go and goes into 1st and no more engine braking is felt.

Does anyone else get that in their M?

I am guessing that this is a new feature in the current generation of Infiniti transmissions.

Yesterday and today, I had a 2009 G37 loaner to drive around - only had 300 miles on the odometer . I noted some interesting things. When in the DS mode, going downhill near my house, I let go of the accelerator at about 45 mph since there were some cars ahead of me (not particularly near, but ...).

In my 2003 M45, the car would have sped up and I would have had to either downshift manually or press the brakes to prevent speeding up.

However, on this G37, the transmission down-shifted on its own - two gears as far as I could tell, rev'ed the engine up, and prevented the car from speeding up past 46 or 47 mph. Quite nice!

I do. Its normal.

Mine does what szhosain described as well. Theres a point on my commute to work where I'm going downhill, about 45 mph, and if my foot is off the gas, or I tap the brake, the car downshifts to hold its speed.

I like and dislike the engine braking on the 2nd gen M45's

I wish we could disable it sometime as it's nice to just coast. Same thing with the ICC - don't hit the brakes going downhill, just let it do it's thing.
