Buying performance chips are a rip off, they are generically tuned not taking into account any mods you might have done. Consult a local certified tuner to program a chip for your vehicle specifically. That or visit http://www.Moates.net and http://www.eccs.hybridka.com to get started tuning.

What if the only mod would be K&N air filter, and some anti-sway bars?

How do you know if a local biz is a certified tuner, or what cert label do I look for?

Basically, I am not seeking major off-the-line type performance improvements, just additional horsepower for passing (and towing/passing).

I appreciate your comments and will check out those sites.

Thanks,Scott

IDK about the VQ40DE engine, you should be checking the VQ forums for this. Here's the link... zeroforum?id=132

There is also the Xterra forum here at Nico, which I believe have the VQ40 as well.

EDIT: Please, no generic cross linking. We are trying to grow the trucks forums here. If there is information that we should have or could be detailed here that would be great

I would do a LOT more research at this point before pulling your computer out to have some unknown tinkering with it. Talk to guys on tuner sites, ask questions. The more you know the less you might have to pay and the less chances of getting something back that doesn't work right.

I'm pretty sure you can go wrong with ECU tuning, so like RevD said, do lots of research at this point to educate yourself on this stuff. Maybe you will even be tuning it yourself someday when you know what you're doing. But in the meantime... stay safe from the BS.

*note*, my opinion is that thare may not be alot in the way of power increases in ECU tuning alone. Tuning the ECU is just a tool that complements the mechanical parts of the engine, and therfore can only optimize those parts so far, and any increases beyond that static limit will need; hotter cams, better flow, better exhaust, intake manifold, etc... The VQ40DE is already pretty hot stock, so IDK what a different tune would actually net you all by itself. Good luck with your pilgrimage!
