Motor started knocking yesterday while in my driveway. Knock was consistent with revs but seemed to quiet down at higher rpms. Pulled valve cover checked rocker arms, tension chain, and shims. Was hoping it was a lifter because when I checked the oil it was a little low but that was probably from cranking it with the cover off looking for the problem. So since I couldnt see anything wrong I replaced the cover and refilled the oil. I was going to take a video motor running to record the sound. It started knocked as loud as ever, then lost idle and died. Now it wont start and I can hear a puff from the exhaust as I crank it. Its a built engine and I just put this damn thing in and it cost me a ton. Some1 please tell me I haven't lost a cylinder or spun a bearing. I cant afford to rebuild it and its my only car

you need to compression test that bad boy, sounds like you dropped a valve.

So you had a shop rebuild a motor and within the first 500 miles was putting the motor into boost and WOT pulls?

You blew it.

thats what i was thinking too, but i dont have access to a compression tester at the moment. a buddy said he'd come by tonight and we'd check it but i havent heard back from him yet. I hope it is a valve and it didnt trash to much cause i have another built head i never got the bottom end built for, found buying a whole motor was cheaper. maybe not

well if you dont have a compression tester than just take out your spark plugs, use a flashlight and look down into your cyl, if you popped off a valve you will be able to see it.

ive only put 2k on it and changed the oil 500 miles ago to check it. i did the redneck bearing test when i first took the cover off (pulled plug, rotated each cylinder to a little farther than tdc and tried pushing them down with a dowl to check for slack) couldnt budge any of them and didnt see any bits or pieces of a valve. I need tools... i borrowed a vehicle if another mechanic friend doesnt make it by today ill go rent some gear from autozone. Im tired of working on this damn thing. Im looking for 4x4 hardbody now so ill have reliable transportation

I truly do believe you bought a lemon of a motor and you are now the fall guy. The only thing I say do is pull the motor and tear it apart because something obviously failed in that motor. Anything with the "fully built" title on it puts me on alert. If I didn't build it myself, the trust is out the door and that is unacceptable. So either work on it yourself or spend the ends and pay someone reputable to do it for you.

recap: got ahold of some tools but not a bore scope to check pistons for marks, compression 30psi each cylinder
got a good look at the front of the cam gears while checking compression
NO OIL PROOF LOCKTITE or any for that matter ON ADJUSTABLE CAM GEARS.
the retainer bolts had backed off and the cam gears were slamming back and forth in the adjustment tracks. put them back where the wear marks were knock went away. Still wont start, now the compression is only at 60psi so either they are not adjusted correctly from eyeballing it, or (and im assuming this is more likely) that when the gears let go, it got so out of time it slammed and bent the valves. So yeah time to clean out the other head and buy a new gasket cause even though I havnt seen damage to the piston tops my valve train is probably wrecked. hopfully find a scope tonight or tomorrow so ill know whether it just needs to go to the shop to have the gears tuned in. ive heard the bc272s are off a bit when using fidanza cam gears so ill let roberts imports of louisville do it. unless there is another shop in the louisville area any1 would reccomend

Engine is in worse shape than originally thought, and Roberts Imports bit off more than they can chew so the vert is done for now. I know I cant sell it here in bfe and it will take to long to part out so we'll take it with us to Pensacola and maybe someday have mazworx build a vvl for it. Found an 04 3.3 4x4 XE for 6500 so looks like Ill be on the truck forum for a while.
