Unless youre experiencing leaks or blowing blue smoke, additives arent really a good idea. Rislone and CD2 are two decent brands of concentrated detergents that can help clacking lifters and other strange noises. But my suggestion is a machine engine flush. Even Jiffy Lube offers a Bilstein Engine Flush for $80. They plug this thing into your engine that looks like Rosie from The Jetsons, and half an hour later youre done.
I did it on my 1995 Mazda 626 I4 5-spd, with 250,000 miles, which seemed to rev smoother and the lifter noise was quieter afterwards. To fully resolve my lifter problem in that situation, I needed a new oil pump.
Also look into something called B12 Chemtool. Wal-Mart carries it for $4, and I use it to keep my injectors and fuel system clean. You can also pour it in the crankcase. As always, READ THE DIRECTIONS!
