i recently installed a new 02 sensor and took the heat sheild off my stock header to get to it easier. any way, to the right of the header, theres this black box with a air line going to the intake. i took that off in the process and realized its hollow, like the stock air box, what is this peice of equipment called?, do i need it and the line that runs from the thing underneath it to the black box, can i just run that to the intake to eliminate that black air box?

That system is the AIV. It's purpose is to let fresh air into the exhaust to warm the cat convertor up faster when it's working properly.

But they usually break and make your motor suck. It's not necessary, later KA's don't have the system. You can completely remove it with no ill effects. just plug all the holes, and cap the vacume lines.
