Someone seems to be serious about purchasing my car- rb20det s13- but they want to know if it will pass emissions in their state (deleware). They want me to take my car through emissions again (it easily passed ATL testing with the stock engine- before the swap) to see what the levels are and if it would pass in DE. Anyone know what will happen if I take it through and it fails? will that be reported to the dmv or will it just be on record at the testing location? I dont want to do this and find out that I have to find a way around emissions a year+ earlier than I would have. Thanx for any input

Well, I dont think anyone on here has done an emissions test for the hell of it, but I'm from ATL so I'll speculate with you...

When you take the test, they sign a printout for you to take to the DMV. So I dont think there is any direct contact with the state other than that 'passed emission' certificate you have to show to renew your tag.

I think you'll be in the clear. If you dont pass, the shop just expects you to come back and test again. I dont think they report the 'passes', much less the 'fails'.

Maybe you can find a small hole-in-the-wall place to do it. Tell the guy you just want to see if your modded motor will pass before you really have to take it. I'm sure he'd let you test since youre gonna pay the $25 fee anyway.

let the buyer worry about all that. If he wants the car passed, let him find his own hole-in-the-wall palace in delaware after he buys it.

i know here in california you can get a pretest just to see your levels of emission. It doesn't get processed through the DMV. Your VIN isn't even entered. I would tell the buyer to pay for the test and then just get one of the pretests.
