I'm trying to get my truck ready for California smog. Everything smog related had been pulled by the PO. I've Googled each of the requirements listed on the emissions sticker but I can't find any info on the AIV under the exhaust emissions control. My best guess is Air Induction Valve and I'm guessing that would put fresh air into the header. But where and how does that happen? And does anyone have a picture?

Thanks

Just got back from another run to Pick n Pull. The 84, 85, 86, and 87 had nothing that looked like an air induction system for the exhausts manifold but they had an 81 datsun 720 there with what was a similar but obviously different engine then my Z24. That engine had a box on the airbox with tubes that ran along the front of the engine and into the exhaust manifold.

Did the 83 Z24 come with that set up? And if it was replaced in later years, what was it replaced with? Or was it done away with completely?

In this picture, you'll notice the long air intake snorkel. About midway through that snorkel, you'll see that strange looking gold cap. In more recent models, there should be an odd pipe that goes from the bottom of that cap to a special fixture on the header/exhaust manifold. In some earlier models, like the one pictured and probably yours as well, there are those two metal pipes that you can see going into the front of the actual carburetor area. Those also come off of the headers.

In the earlier models, I believe that system was called an air induction system. In the newer ones, that odd pipe was just called a "warm air pipe"

Can't think of anything else that would be referring to, unless they are saying you need the whole stock snorkel, ie: no aftermarket carb
