Hey guys!

I am working on rebuilding my KA24E (sohc) and I have a quesion about the emissions equipment...

(copied the below from my rebuild thread)

Right now I am painting the block and will then hone the cylinder walls myself - they don't need much, just to break the glaze and give the new rings the ability to bite into something and seat themselves.

Now I have a question for you any of you that know the answer...

I have thought about removing the emissions crap while I am doing the rebuild. I know that many people do this, however, it seems like many (if not all) also have a modified ECU or piggyback for other reasons (like turbo, or an extreme n/a build).

My question is this:If I was to remove the emissions equipment would I also need to tune it out of the ECU so that it doesn't run in closed loop and hinder performance by running richer and not really taking into account some sensors that monitor A/F ratio?

I am planning on keeping the necessities "visible" (EGR and AIV mainly) just not have them functional so that I can clean up the engine bay. However, if this proves to create more problems than it's worth, I will probably just scrap the plan and just keep everything on and functional.

Thanks for reading!

well you can remove everything except the vac line going to the fuel pressure regulator and the line for the brake booster, but if you're wanting to leave everything on there and not have it functional then you might as well just leave it alone because the engine bay isn't gonna look any cleaner until you remove everything

I was thinking about leaving the EGR and AIV but doing something different with the vac lines that go to them - dumby lines that don't actually connect to the intake maybe. And then remove all of the hard lines and such from the intake manifold. My biggest question is whether or not unplugging / disconnecting the emissions equipment will cause the stock ECU to run rich / closed loop.

it will run fine, I've eliminated everything off of two different single cam cars and it's always ran the same as before, I take it you have emissions testing where you live?

Sort of... We have what they call a "safety inspection" which includes a visual check to see that emissions equipment is present if required by the emissions standards of the year of production.

Which really sucks.
