I’m looking at buying a 1997 240SX with a RB20DET swap, I live in Illinois and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with emissions? (I live in Lake County and they only do OBD2 scans no sniffs)

is there anyway around it? or would i be better off not getting that car?

There is absolutely no way to pass dude. My OBD1 car did pass the sniffer though. They don't do those cars anymore however.

then i have another question:

what if i were to get the car, then do a KA swap..and sell the RB20DET...

then ill probably pass right? yes i know that the swap would be stupid and a waste but i probably could sell the motor and get some money out of it..cause im poor.. but would it be worth it in the end?

so with a SR20DET in a 1997 240sx...would that pass emissions?

as long as you do an obd2 ka24de and put a catlytic converter back on, you should be fine passing.

but if your worried about passing so much why dont you just buy a bone stock 240sx then. there is a sh*t ton of em in st. louis to pick from.

First off all, find out which engine it has. Because it sound to me like you dont even know what your talking about or planing on buying.

Second off all Illinois only tests 96+ OBD2 vehicles in the entire state. Since 20**(IIRC2006 or something), as long as the vehicle passed the smog test before xxxx date and it qualified for exempt than all 95 and older vehicles are now exempt.

*****Some places are exempt entirely, which means no tests OBD2. But that depends on where exactly you live. But sounds like they test in your area.***********

And from what I have heard P.O. Box method works as well, but you have to do your own search on that subject.

i thought illinois was a safty inspection state?, No never heard of it, so I assume entire state is that way.
