I just found out that my 90 TT has test pipes and no cats. I don't really want to buy stock cats, they're expensive. I am getting stationed in the UK, and will have to pass smog. I was thinking of welding in cats in the pipe behind the test pipes before the mufflers. The egr will still be disconnected.

Will that cat placement work? It's only about a foot behind the original placement.

There are cats with an egr pipe out the side, do you think a high temp line from that back will make the egr work?

Anybody in the UK know how emissions work over there, visual inspection, just at the pipe?

Welding cats into testpipes is just fine. As for your EGR, that is connected to the exhaust manifold. The ports on the OEM test pipes are for the AIV, which Nissan deleted in 92 or 93. If you have an aftermarket ECU installed, they're disabled anyway. Chances are, unless the inspector really knows what to look for, your best bet is to delete them all together. Remove the front wheels and pull the fender liner, and you'll see the AIV unit, just remove everything and cap the line in the engine bay that feeds the solenoid valve.

Great, Thanks for the heads up on the AIV. I am still learning how everything works on the Z. Maybe removing the AIV will be my project next week end. I will be putting the cats into the X pipe so when I save up enough for a cat back, I can run everything strait through.

A friend of mine in Norway say he just adds like 50% alchol in the fuel tank before the test to pass SMOG.
I still have CATS so I havent tested it myself yet.
