Car: CA18DET engine building

Post

I am curious as I build up the project car (86 200SX XE hatch -->CA18DET JDM/EU):

How do the mid east people pass emissions. I live in Delaware, where there are 3 emissions stations (only three DOTs here). I am pretty sure when they look at the car, they dont know what they're actually looking at. I am going to swap in the CA18DET BUT I was planning on masking as a CA18ET and keeping the boost down with a replacable but restrictive CAT on the car. They wont look at the ECU cause its too old for DE and I can tag for 2 years, but I was wondering what the emissions output should be for the car and what precautions I should take in passing it other than a bribe.

I know PA, NJ, and MD have pretty restrictive laws on their emissions, but I see turbo'd swaps around all the time. What are the strategies? I wont be doing a test of it until around september when I have what I want completed.

Other question is, I'm rebuilding the CA20E in the car for now and getting it on the road for my beater to iron out the little bugs over time. What about the CA20E engine can be saved for a future turbo build because if the block is the same, it also can be rebuilt with a new DOHC head and some other parts.

I cant wait to get a front clip so I can start, I think the S12 is the coolest in comparison to the common S13's i see here (though mechanically they're pretty solid). Can anyone tell me what the rear of the 86 S12 is and what is swappable to have an LSD in the rear of that car? Is it already some kind of open diff?

I know the R200 diff fits, try clubs12.org(there might be a hyphen or something in there, along with the http://www.)

If you use standalone or a piggyback system for fueling then you can always set the boost really low and then lean it way out at idle...even if they do the dyno test where they actually put the wheels on rollers and see what emissions are under load, you still can lean it out up to like 3,000 rpms as long as you arent getting into boost (set it low) I think that'd help a lot and they dont rev it much higher than 3,000 rpms, if even to that.

you could go to http://www.club-s12.org for any questions. the ones that I can help you with is the diff. on the CA20E is a R190 with 4.11 gears, the CA18ET has a R200 with 4.11 gears but both don't have LSD. You could take another lsd from a 240sx and swap it in but you would need to use the diff mounting back plate for the 200sx because it is different than the 240sx.

So, its an open diff with equal distribution to both wheels? Hmm.. I guess I would be interested in finding a 240sx rear that could be fitted. Is there much work to that or is it a bolt on procedure?

They dont dyno test here at our DMVs but they just check the emissions at idle and like 2500 rpms. I guess with a boost controller, I can keep that under wraps then. I dont think they do the VIN check on the car anyway... so they'll never know the difference between the DET and ET by looking at it.

thanksjw

in the worst case you could take the guts out of the 240sx lsd and put them in the r200 form a 200sx, but your diff. is the r190 wich is used in the 1/4 ton trucks aswell. I don't know if they ever came with lsd but you can buy one from here. http://www.4x4parts.com/public...abd5a

the 89 300ZX (NOT TT) LSD and the 240 LSDs plug right up to the 200SX rear (minus a bracket to mount it which is used from the current r180 rear). So in actuality, I could find it in a junkyard easy and cheap. Now if I just had a portable car lift...

check out these apples baby!

Thats gonna be my body panels after I'm done with all mechanical operations on the vehicle.
