hi i was wondering about the tests in illinois i have seen this from the epa's illinois official site:

Q. What kind of test is used?A. Three types of tests are used. In July 2002, an On Board Diagnostic Test (OBD) replaced the traditional exhaust emissions test for most 1996 and newer passenger cars and light duty trucks (including vans and sports Utility vehicles.) An IM240 test is used for most 1981-1995 vehicles and a basic Idle test for 1968-1980 vehicles.

does this mean that if i had a 1995 or older car with a RB swap i could pass emissions?

these emissions questions are getting a bit repetetive guys

legally, NO its not legal.

will it pass a sniffer? yes

will it pass a visual? depends on the inspector.

how on an informitave fourm based website can you say questions are getting repetitive, when people ask from two different states, regarding emmissions testing that i would assume is different in each state, maybe someone should make a sticky post regarding emmissions. I searched, did not find info, so i asked the online community, a group of people with more specific knowledge.

outside of california emissions testing is all basically the same

from 88-95 it will be a sniffer, from 96+ its a OBD2 scan.

on paper, ALL RB's ARE ILLEGAL. it was never sold here. it was never passed by the EPA, bla bla bla bla.

they WILL pass a sniffer test if its running well with a cat. they MAY pass a visual, it depends on the inspector.

engine swaps with non-US available engines are a huge grey area

all engines are the same when it comes to the numbers (hc, co, nox, etc) so any engine can pass a numbers test.

and i know ive answered this question a ton of times before so i dont know what to tell you about searching. there wont be a sticky about emissions, because in black and white. a RB is illegal. period. now wether or not you get through depends largley on the state, and inspectors, and bla bla bla. so there is no for sure answer.

Kane county,

Passed sniffer with no problems, they did not do a visual. I do run a cat btw.
