Hello Eveyone.....

I failed the Virginia Emission today with these reasons:

CO% - Limit .46, mine is .50NO ppm - Limit 1500, mine is 1770

Whys is this happening? I am a newbie and I don't know what to do. The guy told me that he can fix it for $250. But that's too much for me.

I already tried adding "Guaranteed to Pass Additives" to my gas but didn't help. I read on the forum that it must be an EGR issue. But what and where can I find that on my engine? Do you think o2 sensor and Catalytic Converter are another culprits?

I appreciate all the help.

Thanks.

Sooo, you have your car tested by a mechanic? Who conveniently can fix it for you? Who happens to know exactly what is wrong (unless $250 is a wild shot in the dark?) But he didn't mention what the problem might be? I'd get a second opinion. The EGR is on the back corner on the intake side, at the other end of that pipe that curls around the back of your engine to the exhaust manifold. It's circular and sticking up right by another circular item (the BPT). You should be able to push the underside up and it will return. It lets exhaust gasses back into the intake.

your CO is close, if you change your O2 it may get you over the limit for passing. its a cheap part, worth a try if its old.

That's a good idea. I checked our auto parts store and they're selling 02 sensor for $18. I'll probably get a new one.

But on the EGR side, it's kinda pricey. I'll try to clean mine with Carb Cleaner. I'll also try to clean the Throttle body. Do you think this will help or buying a new one is the best option. Do I also need to buy a BPT valve?

Also make sure that the vacuum elbow connected to the bottom of the egr is ok and not leaking. Mine was dry rotted and had a big hole in it, I replaced it for not even .50 cents and bingo i passed.

i was about to say the same thing....check the hose that goes to the bottom of the EGR, its a 90 degree bend and a fairly big tube so its easy to see. if it has a hole in it, the EGR will not work

First of All, I'd like to thank everybody who helped me in this forum.

I finally passed the emission. These are the stuffs that I did.

1. Clean the EGR and replaced the 90 deg broken hose from the EGR to the BPT Valve.2. Replaced the O2 Sensor.3. Clean the throttle body.

I took out the hood for better access to the EGR. Took me 3 hours to take the EGR out, cleaning and putting it back together. Due to small access at the back of the Intake Mani, patience is very essential.

My hardwork paid off. Now, I'm ready for the turbo project.

Thanks everybody.
