Hey folks, this evening my '78 620 RV broke down in Cheyenne on my way home to Minneapolis on the end of my three month road trip to Texas and California. Seems like it's simple, but I don't know and don't have enough money to get it looked at, so I'm throwing this out there:

Pulled into motel and got a room, came back out to move the truck and nothing happens when I turn the key. The dash lights come on like normal and the headlights turn on bright, but it doesn't do anything when I turn the ignition. No click click, no nothing. Just sits there. Is it the alternator??

If anyone has had this happen to them or know what it is please let me know in the next 12 hours! Email me at lostjohndean at g mail dot com or call me at 651 THREE73 8019. Obi Wan Kanobi, your my only hope!

Alternator?

Or battery, not enough cold cranking amps?

Pull battery and see if you can find nearest autozone or somewhere to get it tested. Also see if a jump will start the car.

Okay, thanks I'll investigate. The battery is only a year old and it's a decent one. But if it's not the battery it's got to be the alternator, right? Or is there something else electrical in between the battery and alternator I should be looking at?

Starter solenoid, possibly. Try to bridge the two terminals on the starter with a screwdriver with the key on and see if it'll start.

Bridged the bolts on the starter solenoid and it sparked and I think I heard it spin the starter. Got in the truck and it started! I started it a couple of times without any problems. Back on the road to Minneapolis. Thanks a lot, you really saved the day!
