What's a safe fuel alternative in emergencies? I can find anything on the web and haven't had the best luck with gasoline in red containers (they always leak and one can smell the fumes in the cabin). A few years ago (2000) Prestone or Pennzoil sold a fuel alternative that worked well enough for my mom but can't find anything close today. I read a link to about mixing 151 rum with crushed moth crystals - it sounded like something MacGyver would do, and nothing the girlfriend could do. Plus 151 is about $30 a bottle and the article didn't even mention everclear - go figure. The girlfriend ran out of gas in my car and was saved by AAA, but I want to be proactive incase she ignores all the warning of low fuel again. Please let me know if there's anything available that is safer.

Hey there sorry to hear about to girlfriends luck.

I would strongly advise against any type fuel alternative. The M in particular really prefers Premium and I cannot imagine what putting 151 rum and moth balls? I'm not willing to run this test, as I fear the consequences would suck.

You may want to show your GF the nifty fuel econ screen it only takes two button pushes to find out how many miles you can push it. Also keep in mind that running a fuel pump dry will significantly decrease its life span as it heats up and accelerates wear.

Good Luck.

How about always refilling at no less than ¼ tank?

That AAA card seems about the safest to me. And the wait for AAA to arrive would certainly be an incentive to me to not let it happen again. But that's just me ... your mileage may vary.

This is indeed important ... to avoid the fuel pump being stressed more than necessary.

I still have a bottle of that emergency gas called "Rescue". You aren't missing much. It was only about 2 quarts worth and it did still smell through the container... Not enough for a thirsty M and stinks....
