Electronic Performance Distributor for Sentra 1.6 L

A great resource for Nissan Sentra, Infiniti G20, 200sx, Pulsar, NX1600, NX2000, Tsuru, Primera and Sunny owners.

I have a 1996 Sentra GXE with a 1.6 Liter which has the Hitachi distributor. I'm trying to improve performance in every way except throwing more expensive gas in. Can anyone tell me if there is a reliable (important!) solid-state performance distributor for this car? I want to eliminate the rotor and cap and pump more juice to the plugs.

Thanks!

J

Okay, several people have looked and no one came back with an answer, so - Alternate scenario: Will a solid-state multi-coil system from another Nissan 4-banger work and work well on this car? And has anyone seen journals or guides on how it was done? And did it help?

I've never seen a performance distributor for a 1.6, and I've never heard of anyone modifying a coil-on-plug setup from another car to fit.

To be honest, I don't think you'll see any benefit from it even if you could make it work. The 1.6 was set up for economy from the factory, so I wouldn't expect much in the way of efficiency/power losses from spark.

That said, the grounding on most Sentras is pretty poor, so one thing you can do is put in a grounding kit. It'll help with all the electronics and power delivery.

Thanks for the tip on improving grounding. The reasons I was thinking a rotorless system with more power power might help are: 1. It responded very well to putting better cables and plugs in. When I installed NGK v-groove Iridiums it promptly went up hills a gear taller than before. 2. The best distributor caps I can find for this engine (including dealer) are ALL aluminum contact which corrodes immediately. (Brass lasts longer.) I can put Oxygard between the cable end and tower contact, but all I can do inside the cap is to scrape the hard white crud off, and it absolutely makes a difference every time, but it's back within a week. If I could eliminate that, it would deliver its best power to the plug all the time. And I wouldn't be constantly scraping the cap. Even a brass-contact cap source for the 1.6 Hitachi would help some.

In the meantime though, I'll check out grounding kits - sounds very worthwhile.
