Post

I just bought a 93 fastback. Biggest project I've ever undertaken in my life. I swear to God...whoever took the parts OFF of that car must have just been like "Nuts and bolts? **** NUTS AND BOLTS!" Anyway, a few friends and I finally have the motor and transmission mated and mounted in the car, and everything mechanical is right (hopefully). Anyway, so we plug up a battery and check the lights. All interior lights work (except for the backlight on the gauges and clock when the headlights are on...though the backlight for the clock works when the lights are turned off...), as do the headlights and motors, turn signals, and brakelights/tail lights. So I try to turn it over...nothing. Then one of my friends reminds me that I didn't plug the starter into the wiring harness...so I get under the car (mind you, the battery's still hooked up) and plug it up. Well while I'm pulling my hand back, I graze a disconnected ground wire, which swings over and grounds itself to the chassis (yikes!). Well now, none of the interior stuff works except for the backlight for the clock when the lights are off. The turn signals, brake, and tail lights don't work. The headlights DO work...but the motors don't. I visually inspected all of the fuses on the fuse block under the dash...they're all fine (looking). I'm pretty sure I blew (a) relay(s) . One thing is DID notice, is when I turn the car to ON...then turn it off...**** starts clicking. I'm pretty sure that this is just cause I don't have half of the grounds hooked up.

I suppose my two questions are as follows:

1.) Which relays should I check? I don't have any kind of formal relay checking method available (that I know of), so do you guys think that hooking two wires up to a battery, and touching them to the right pins on the relay would suffice (if it clicks, the relay's good, right?)

2.) Why would the backlight not work? As I stated before, there were no blown fuses under the dash .

Look at the Main fuse's in the engine bay--you blew one of them--make sure that the battery is charged.

Best idea for your wiring project.Beg someone with the identical model (same production year as some '92 are made '91) and trim to see which goes where.I did the same and took pictures which solved major wiring issues.

You might check the time control unit. It's a white box in the left kick panel. Remove it, open it up and check for a burned circuit.
