Around 3000rpms, my headlights dim, the clock dims and if I turn my turn signal on, my CD player turns off. Alternator was recently replaced, grounds are good. The only thing I can think of is maybe the battery isn't grounded properly as it is now grounded to the trans. Any thoughts? The car is a modified 96 Maxima. Mods include:

5spd conversion00VI retrofitFull exhaust minus headersUpgraded ECU

Any help would be appreciated.

Get a charging system check done. It is recommended during the test to have all loads on and bring the car to the specific RPM in which the systems dim out. You will be monitiering the alternator output before the occurance and during the occurance. See if the output amperage is dropping off. If so I think your got a bogus alternator.

you know - a lot of people who have systems usually have this problem - the electrical drain from the system cause everything to dim and not work properly -

i would have the alternator tested to make sure it's working right - which thats pretty easy - go to autozone or pepboys and have them test it with a machine they use - it's free and you may find the one you have is no good -

Thanks for the suggestions.

This happened last night:

After six runs at the track, I started home at 75-80mph. All lights began dimming around 2500rpms regardless of what gear I was in. At one point, I pulled over, turned off the car and tried to restart it. No go. Waited fifteen minutes and after struggling, it started back up. I drove the rest of the way at 50mph (2000rpms in 5th gear).

I had the Autozone people check the alternator with a new battery and with my old one. With the new battery, 14.79 and 189 amps. With the old battery, 14.62 and 170amps. Thoughts? I replaced the alternator with a Nissan rebuilt unit in April of 05.

Charging system seems to be ok. PErhaps you have a connection issue at the battery. Primarily the 2 connectors at the positive battery cable. See if you got a good connection there.

I should add that the alternator was tested at 2000rpms which is an engine speed before any of my problems start. Should I have it retested at say, 3000 to see if the diodes and regulator are functioning properly at that engine speed?
