So I just picked up my first 1990 sr20det 240 last week and was super excited until of course things started going wrong!

I was installing my stereo when I heard a short and the dash lights and the climate control lights went out.

After many days of research I still cant find a solution. I have taken the tcu out and checked the circuitry, I have replaced and tested (and re tested) all the fuses (kick panel and engine) and still nothing.

I decided to ground the red w/yellow stripe wire to try to fix the problem from my stereo harness but this just ended up blowing my taillight fuse and now my right headlight is out 2!

yes I have seen all the other related threads and searched PLEASE DONT TELL ME TO KEEP SEARCHING!!! I have spent hours on these threads and am not trying to skip out on the research. PLEASE HELP!!

Well, as a former installer, take another look at the color codes for the stereo. It sounds like you have hooked the ground form the stereo to the dimmer lead on the car's harness. Chrysler was classic for this one. The stereo grounded through a bolted connection, but the dimmer lead was all black. People connected black to black and popped the dash lights and parking light circuit. I did that in a Ford too.

Take a break and make double sure all the fuses are not popped. Are there fusuable links on an SR20 harness? Unhook at least the power to the stereo and see if that helps the car.

Edit: If memory serves, yellow with red switched power, try unhooking that one?

I was getting so freaking frustrated...you probably just saved someones life haha

yes... it is an error in the stereo installation... I gotta figure that out still but all that matters is that I can have dash lights so I can get this sucker through inspection....

I owe you a drink or like 7 dude

So I take it that worked? Don't feel bad, you're not the only one that has done that.
