Okay so we (my boyfriend and I) have had this '89 coupe for about 4 years. This problem has always been around and we could never figure it out what was wrong so we left it alone;

When ever we turn on the high beams, all the lights will shut off except the high beams. Tail lights also go out but they still light up when you break. I know this would be an awesome feature for running the cops , but its sucks when you need them for that dark area at night. Also when we switch it back to the regular driving lights, everything goes back to normal. The car did this before and after the silvia front conversion.

^This isn't the main problem but it could be affiliated with the real one.

We recently did a motor swap (KAE to S14 KADE) and 5 speed swap within the last few weeks. But this problem didn't start showing up until after I replaced the aftermarket wheel hub due to the other one cracking. We did have a very hard time removing it so there is a chance that we could have damaged the switch for the lights but I haven't got a clue.

So the problem is:

For the last three days, every once and awhile, usually after we park and leave the car for awhile, the passenger side high beam would turn on, for no reason. Just the passenger side. But after we play with the light switch, it turns off. Also every once when we are driving the car with the lights on, the high beams would sometimes turn on together with the driving lights even though the switch is not activated for it.

Anyone have any ideas? All fuses have already been checked. I haven't got a clue when to begin to look right now. All the wires look good to me around the steering wheel column.

sounds like you have a hidden short somewhere. Are they stock headlights?

is ur car lowered?

check the driver side fender harness & the relay box by the intake filter. those 2 contain most of the headlight stuff. start pulling relays, tracing wires w/ voltimeters, etc.

Don't count out the posability of the headlight switch itself being bad. Sounds more like a shorted wire/relay problem though.

Just a follow up, I gave in and replaced both steering wheel column switches and everything works now like how it should. Haven't had a problem since then.
