Electric problem.

About two years ago my CD player display stop lighting up on most 02 sentras its a blue with light blue? But now The backround is a grayish and letters are black with no light. Recently it has been coming on and going off coming on about once every month. Now all my gauges have gone dark except the brake light and such. I have found out why i think my gauges have gone down and that is the light in the middle of the car has 3 settings, On,Off,and the only when doors open. When its in the on or off postion the gauges wont come on next start. When its in the only when doors open it will stay on but not the cd player.

Is this common or is this some weird electrical short? i have also noticed alot of rust on the side rails i belive. There is very little rust anywhere else on the car but the side rails are really rusty.

Any advice?

My stock radio started lighting intermittently and eventually stopped lighting up at all, not my gauges though. Start by checking the fuses and making sure your battery terminals are clean.
