Dennis - Is there any reason we couldn't use a 2600 cfm electric dual fan setup on the Q?

I have access to one with adjustable thermostatic control.

If it's OK to use, what temp should I set it at?

(New rad / t-stat / coolant already, will replace temp sending unit to be accurate)

Other than wasting the alternator life? You set it so that the coolant temp sensor reads as close to 176-185F as possible under all conditions.

Be careful lots of fans are speced at ZERO static pressure and real world dirty/bent rads and condensers may halve or quarter the real air flow and the current goes way up trying.

OK, so in consideration of the alternator concerns, and assuming that I'm hard headed and will probably do this mod anyway, would I be better off "overdoing it" (more CFM rating) or staying down in the 2500 CFM range?

I understand the static pressure issue, and I'll make sure radiator restriction remains AS NEW to minimize alt draw.

Hitman,

Where did/are you getting the electric fan from?

I'm gonna pull one outta my butt. :D

j/k - Probably Summit.

Don't worry, I'll buy two, one for each of us. :)

I thought the clutch worked such that the fan was not driven at any speed where the airflow was sufficient to sool the motor.

Why not look at a FY33 to see how the twin fans were implemented? Maybe a higher capacity alternator was used?

How would you know if the fan fuse blew since it is not integrated with the G50 computers?

Hitman,

What do I do, after you drop off your tank to the radiator shop? Do they know what to do, do I need to tell them (what do I tell them)

Paranoid about my car substaining 100+ speeds for 45 minutes in the hot vegas september heat

I was trying to be subtle before, but I don't think it worked... Sometimes it's difficult with the written word, so I'll be blunt:

I wouldn't go to THAT specific shop. You need to call around on your own and find a place to do it. I'm not trying to be rude, but the guy who did mine is no longer there, and only did mine because he "owed" me some work. The guy that's still there doesn't do wonders for my confidence.

You're still MORE than welcome to my old radiator to use as a model for any shop to use...

Guy used to work for Dan's on Gold Dust Ave.

He's not interested in doing any more of them (went to lunch with him this afternoon) but he says Dan would put something together for around $450-$500.... Smoking price compared with Griffin's deal.

I'll drop off my old one with him if you want (so he can use it as a jig).

Peoria.

I should be able to drop it off later this week.

Thanks AZ.

Really appreciate it

My wife's Acura 2.2CL (1997) has two electric motor fans. Thermostatically controlled - they turn completely off when not needed.

As far as my experience has gone alot of fans came with dual fans, usually they are on v6 cars.

One fan is for the cooling of the motor in general and the other comes on when you put on the AC.

I had an electric one on my t-bird and when you ran the defroster and headlights you would almost kill the car when at idle. I actually prefer the clutch fan now.

Interesting ... the Acura 2.2CL is a four-cylinder.

sorry I meant on 4cyl and 6 cyl

It has been a while since I drove a 4 or 6.

Almost forgot that 4 cylinder still existed.

Dont get me wrong 4 are fast

Just look at the twin turbo in that movie the wraith with charlie sheen.

OK, back on topic... :)

Any more opinions on this mod?

And what about using a REALLY heavy-duty dual-fan setup, like 6000 cfm? Too much draw?

If you could have some sort of 2 speed setting, that would be ideal.....

When your cruising you may not need as much cooling.. Say maybe have it come on a low setting when it reaches 180*F, then high when it gets above 195*F, that IMHO would help save the alternator and still give good cooling.. Then when it starts getting around the 200* area the condensor fan in front of the radiator will come on......

I also mirror what Brian said... maybe you could rig some sort of indicator light that tells what the "fan status". Red when its off, yellow when its on low, and green when its on high or osmething like that, so if the fan dies you can know before you melt the engine.....

Not much need for variability in AZ, although whatever I do will be thermostatically controlled (but only one speed - HIGH).

My condensor fan runs all the time except in the winter months.

160 degree air coming through the radiator doesn't carry away a lot of radiated heat....

Why you have to go fast. Front mounted ATF cooler doesn't help here either.

True.

But going fast is NO panacaea, as evidenced by my pre-radiator-swap posting.

Higher speeds means harder-working engine, which negates any additional cooling provided by "going faster", and 160 degrees remains constant regardless of velocity. :(

The law of diminishing returns certainly applies here.

I guess I shouldn't suggest a switch to the stock 3.53 rear end to let the engine loaf at those speeds? :D

I doubt any fan could pull more air than is forced through at 55-60 mph.

While 160° F is constant, addtional passing air mass volume should help at some certain speed.

LOL - BLASPHEMY!!! I'd rather call Griffin and swap to the 4.36. :)

Fan would be for when the car is sitting still... Reduce engine drag and keep some air crossing the condensor / radiator.

Well, look at the FY33 set up, then. The shrouds and all should be more adaptable, but maybe not. At least it will give you an idea how it was implemented there. I think they served the exact function you describe, in addtion to the engine viscous drive fan. Wish I could go to the garage and look, but I can't.

I know a guy who makes radiators in AZ. He made me one & a couple of my TT buddies. Great stuff. Spal electric fans with thermostats wired into them. Relay to insure proper power without straining the alt. Comes with everything! Mine was about $500 for everything. My 86 turbo used to overheat in traffic with A/C on & also at the track when it sat around after runs. Not anymore! I will eventually have him build me one for the Q. This Vegas weather can really stress a cooling system. Pics of mine are here for your viewing pleasure. this is the hardware

Thanks for the post. Very interesting to see an example of custom configuration. Hopefully we'll have a few photographs of custom radiators from the Q45 up sometime soon.
