I want to install an electric fan and get rid of the clutch fan. however, it looks like the stock fan is part of the water pump. how do i separate it?

just remove the actual fan blades... its a couple of bolts

this way the water pump and all is still in tact.. you just don't have the blades spinning any more

http://www.thefanman.com is the place to get the supplies, that is where i get my cooling needs for my BMW Z3 (hence my screen name )

if that clutch fan does indeed unbolt from there then this will be a very easy mod.

My experience with my old Z24 had the fan clutch built into the water pump. I had to disassemble the clutch fan itself and leave part of it on. I was told there is a certain water pump that will bolt on and has the fan clutch seperate.

Here's my old setup.

i have that style water pump as well, after looking at my pump it has no bolts going through it just the center shaft. not, i have air tools and a die grinder. . .i wonder how much of the clutch i can get off

thanks for the input if anyone has the info on the pump that will work with out the clutch that would be A+

Guess you don't want to see how it looks currently.

What motor is that? I see you have the aluminum valve cover and a manual fuel pump... is that a Z22 or LB motor? that might be the reason for your water pump being different.

so its a 2000 Z3?

my friend has an E46 325i that we've been going at what seems daily as far as mods and maintenance. does yours have the 2.5 or 3.0?

another note: i'll try to post a pic of the 325 tomorrow as well

I know 240 owners steal altima fans all the time and remove the Clutch fan blades. Then wire them up. Either to be on while car is on or wire it up to turn on by the thermostat.

yeah. it's a z22. i was hoping that it would at least be similar so he could use it though

they make t-stats to hook up to the fan that are fully adjustable. also the temp sensor for them is external radiator mount (well it pushes in between the cooling fins.)

.mine are on the ignition switch. it's not hard at all. just tap into the fuse box and find a spot that is only on with the ignition.

my electric fans on my 240sx are wired to my fuel pump, so they kick on when the key is set to accessory.

ill wire it the same way on my 720, once i get a hold of some taurus fans.

Alright got it done

I built my own fan relay using the adjustable temp 30a fan switch found on jegs, a universal 4 prong relay and some wire.

Instead of running the fans off the old stock wire in the truck (i could have used the 20a fuse that was for the a/c that i removed) i installed another fuse block as you can see in the left of the pic above. it has 4ga wire ran from the battery to the terminal on the fuse block this will give me plenty of current capacity for anything i add on later. It is always hot which is why i had to use a relay on the fan controller.

for the fans i am running dual 10" fans mounted on the front of the radiator (i have always liked the clean look of them being out of sight )

one fan is a very old s blade universal fan that i use to use to cool my trans in my rock krawler it is a 1,500 cfm. the other 10" is new from jegs and to my surprise was only 50 bucks and supplies 1,000 cfm @ 6.5a current draw.

all in all i think i have $100 bucks into this, you would be at $150 if you purchased 2 of the 10" fans.

the truck rev's easier and has been getting better fuel milage and seems to have more power. I would recommend this mod to anyone
