Hi, i'm new...but have been reading for about 3 months. I have an 2002 Q45 w 170,000 miles on it. runs great. haven't had any problems for a while.

except now!

My electric radiator fan works...except it seems to 'roar' when I accelerat. It also does it if I'm in the driveway and raise the rpms.
the car is not overheating and the fan seems to come on when it is suppose to. I put in new coolant and a thermostat at the start of the summer (regular maintainance)
when the car idles, the fan is going just fine. you can tell it's on but very quite. when I give it gas, the fan seems to go faster and louder. Like being in a wind tunnel. I check the fluid level in the resevoir and it is fine.
I have downlaoded the fsm (very cool) and this issue doesn't seem to be addressed.
any thoughts?

thanks
joe

The factory radiator fan is engine driven, not electric. It has a hydraulic clutch and a resevoir for fluid. When I first got my 2002 Q, the resevoir was all but empty. To check it, you have to remove the plastic engine cover. The resevoir is in the front center of the engine. This would be a first place to check.

BTW if you have an owner's manual, there are pictures and fluid specs.

I don't remember what year, but the cooling fan was later changed to electric on the Q45.

I should have said oil resevoir.

I have looked at thje FSM......which I said "I have downlaoded the fsm (very cool) and this issue doesn't seem to be addressed.

Ok, it is a Hydraulic fluid-driven fan. THe fluid passes thru the water pump. page CO-17

however, despite how it spins, there IS an electric circut that turns the fan on and off (unlike 'engine driven' which uses a direct shaft or fan belt). EC-534

The electric circuit controls a solenoid that allows the fluid to go to the fan so that it can spin up to pull air in.

:welcome: to NICO Joe!

Per the FSM, the fan will operate at full speed if the control solenoid is disconnected. You might want to go through the diagnostics beginning on EC-535.
