Found out tonight that, if you're accelerating under boost in 3rd gear, then accidentally shift to 2nd and dump the clutch, you get a 7,052 rpm rev, some fire out the muffler, and a wonderful cloud of smoke out the back.

Oh, this of course, is on a stock KA24DE-T with just under 200k miles.

The good news is, I smoked that pesky Honda that wouldn't let me pass (they were in the left lane...silly) and the engine still seems to run fine and has a nice smooth idle. I didn't smell any fluid burning, but I'll give it a thorough inspection in the morning to make sure I didn't blow something.

I pheal stoopid.

From what I gather, a kade is pretty safe at 7k. Just don't do it again.

I sit up around 7k for minutes at a time when I drift.. bah bah bah bah, off the rev limiter.

That's with a N/A KA24E, turbo might put more stress on it but my guess would be you're ok.

Did the fireball set the Civic on fire and make it burn to the ground?

JWT sets the rev-limiter at 7200 on their turbo ECUs. I've personally hit 7000 a few time WOT at around 15 psi and it's been no problem for me...then again i'm fully built with head work, but generally 7000 isn't that extreme for a KA. Just don't bring it up there often.

lucky you, a friend of mine threw a rod that way.(it was a civic too, he shifted same way, cept for some reason this civic didn't have a rev limiter, and tho those engines are rev happy, they too do have a limit)

yours should be ok, i've hit 7k a couple of times also in 2nd gear.(on 1 of my engines the oil pump was bad, hit 7k, low oil pressure light came on(~5psi of oil or less), engine didn't throw a rod, but it did spun a bearing)

This engine has seen 7500 before, but that was winding it and when it had only around 140-150k miles on it.

No, sadly the Civic didn't burn to the ground, but they did stay WAY back after that.

I just need to wrap up my built engine (almost ready to drop in) and get this old one out of the car SOON.

For some reason, I find it easier to make this mistake in the 240 than in any other car I've driven.

I drove the car out to play golf today and it did just fine, with the outside temp around 90* with 40% humidity. However, I think there's some internal corruption causing a high output of ionized radiation, resulting in my inability to swing a golf club correctly.

At least, that's what I'm gonna go with.

Nah it was the pockets of humidity in the air that would deflect your ball.....your ball only...

You were very lucky. Rev limiters do nothing to protect an engine on a missed upshift and hitting a lower gear. The inertia on the car and the gearing can make that engine spin like a turbine. A fast foot on the clutch is the only thing that protects your engine from blowing. With all the electronics now (and idiot proof controls) you'd think someone would've invented a device that would prevent a person from shifting from a higher gear to a lower gear at redline without a cumbesome device like the old Ferrari shift gate. Don't know about the new cars, maybe they do have something like this. Almost everyone who drives a manual at the limit will experience this at one time or another.

Sadly, I wasn't anywhere near "the limit." I was just passin' a car.

And yes, you're correct in saying that limiters mean nothing when accelerating an engine much more quickly that it was built to handle.

In the end, it seems like it's just fine. Chalk up another "tough as nails" story for the KADE.
