Does anyone know the safe egt zone for the KA? I'm thinking around 1600 max.

I dont think thats right.... well, it's going to depend on where your probe is. From what i've learned is you should be safe up to and maybe a lil over 1200. I've never seen my car go over 1200, and most of the time sits in 800-1000.

I get up to about 920 C on extended runs... I try not to keep it there very long. Daveee... you put it in the one closest to the radiator??? Its supposed to be either in the center of the manifold where all the runners join, or if you are going to use just one runner it should be #4 near the firewall, thats the cylinder that gets hottest.

Why would it matter where it's at, on my motor the front cylinder will show signs of detonation before any of the others. The thing that's really important is to get it as close to the exhaust valve as you can.

you will generally get almost 75-100 higher if you put it where all four are instead of just where one is. this isnt that bad.

jay remember you have the bottom end from hell to handle it.

You probe your manifold or turbo.... to find out the temp of the exhaust gas..... pretty self explanitory, isnt it?

since you don't know how an EGT even works either.

Actually Jay is probably the only one that knows this , EGT's for a particular motor are characteristic of that particular motor.

Read this First:http://www.sdsefi.com/techegt.htm

Basically states that in order for one to tune by EGT, you must also have a wideband o2 on the car at the same time telling you if your AF is rich or lean. At point you determine by the AF that your are running good, then you see what your EGT is AT THAT EXACT POINT. You can then watch your EGT on the street to make sure there are not big changes in it while under boost and such. If you see a change, something is up, if you add a mod to the car, you have to do it all over again, cause there are A LOT of things that effect EGT's.

Runner 4 on the manifold is the runner of choice by most, or in the collector like Jay said.

Most KA's I have seen running big boost have EGT's in the area of 1550F to 1650F(race fuel)........don't take these as the numbers you motor will make, cause it very well could differ.

If your probe is in the down pipe, you typically will see a 200 degree drop in temps, but once again, till you get a wide band and tune your AF mixture, you really can't say what your EGT's are supposed to be.

Sorry big pet peeve of mine.
