As for the strong fuel odor, that shouldn't have anything to do with the EGR valve. It's only concerned with flowing exhaust gases back into the intake to be burned again. Most people just delete them because trying to change one with the engine in is a royal PITA.
Does the car have any other symptoms (i.e. stumbling, rough idle, etc.) besides the fuel odor?
