So I was looking at my engine today and I was checking out the EGR to see how to take it out I noticed that the vacuum line was unhooked and someone had put a bolt in it to clog it... now i'm the original owner of this car so I know it must have been one of the shops that I took it to a few years ago who had done this.. is it ok to just leave that line unattached and pluged? does that make the EGR not function? can it cause problems?

if you aren't in a state that requires it, leave it plugged. The thing just causes problems, and while the hippies might yell at you, keep in mind that the EGR reduces NOx, but increases HC by inhibiting proper combustion.

Is there anything else to unhook from it or just that one line? I think it's funny that the shop just did it like that... haha I can tell the guy was not a hippie

Just the one line. All the other stuff in the EGR system is just to ensure that your EGR gets the proper amount of vacuum.
