Try to get at it from under the car. Removing the starter will give you some more clearance. I dont believe you will be able to put a socket wrench on the bolt, but a 12mm wrench will fit and take a LOT longer, but its better than removing the entire intake manifold.

Um i havent heard of any benefit of removing it. I had to replace mine a while back because it was clogged up and stuck. Just made it run rough and idle funny. Im not sure what removing it will do.

Removing the egr can cause the engine to ping alot when hot.

Now that i kno what the where the EGR valve is what is the other valve that recerculates exhaust gas back into the intake air box? Can u remove that?

you are thinking of aiv. it is not supposed to route exhaust to the air box but thats what it does on some cars(bad). it is supposed to allow intake air into the exhaust in strategic locations to warm up cat and promote degredation of exhaust gasses.

I'm pretty sure mine is clogged cause my engine runs rougher then any other 240 I've driven.. What exactly does it look like cause I was show by a friend of mine that is a mechanic but I forgot.. Is there anyway I can clean it instead of replacing it?

Another question.. I heard that if that thing is clogged it'll make your car run rich... I know mine is and the dang thing won't pass smog because of it.. I fixed the timing and got a new CAT and everything and it still fails.

Does that sound like it's an EGR problem? I really need to get my car smogged. Thanks a lot.. If you can can you guys reply back to me through e-mail? It'll be a lot easier for me cause I'm at work and I'm not even suppose to be here (On the net).

Thanks a lot guys and keep up the good work in this forum.

egr is the fix for nox emmissions. if your nox is high the egr should be the first place to go. put vacuum directly to the egr valve and see if the engine dies.

Yeah my nox was high.. I'll try to either clean it out or just replace it... I'm tired of this thing failing !

the main reason for the egr valve is to recirculate hot exhaust gas back into the motor to reduce cylinder temperatures thus reducing NOX emmisions. blah

The EGR is bolted to the back of the intake manifold near the firewall. You can clean the EGR by first removing it from the intake; get a new gasket. Before cleaning it, test the vacuum actuator.

If the EGR is clogged, it won't richen the mixture but will cause the NOX emissions to be high.

ive taken the egr, aiv, pair and swirl off of the engine and eliminated all vacuum lines except fuel pressure and car ran fine....didnt like the idea of exhaust gasses being recycled back into my intake..not a huge performance gain but i guess more of a piece of mind thing...also alot cleaner engine bay
