reach up under it and feel the diaohram. while doing that reach over and goose the throttle a couple times see if it raises up. if it does its likely working ok. also you can manualy push up on it and see if it will kill the car or make it stumble horribly bad.

ok i checked the bottom of the bpt and the hose on the bottom of it was cracked up and seperated realy bad but other than that i looked on the bottom of the egr and there wasnt anything under there that i could find that was messed up. another thing is that when i crank my car it sounds like there is something plastic that keeps hitting the top of the valve cover it seems to run alright but it keeps getting louder and louder over time.i have an extra head and i dont see anything on it that would cause it to sound like that. if you could help me out i would greatly apreciate it.thanxcody

That hose you felt was the BPT hose replace it but thats not whats causeing your stumble. The noise your hearing is likely a bad upper timing chain guide. do a search in here and 240 technical pretty common problem.

What yr is your car?

I had this exact problem...not sure if you fixed it or not, but on my 89 240 it was caused from an improperly installed drive shaft. You have to line that shaft up perfectly strait for it not to do the shaking. I used 2 friends, and a string. I'll post a pic of the steady bearing. It's right near the middle of the shaft and you'll notice if you take off the shaft, the rubber thing isn't perfectly round. You have to have it in the right position for the shaft to be perfectly strait. I just had my 2 friends hold a string, and then I turned the steady bearing until it lined up perfectly.

Try that if you haven't figured it out yet

That's the steady bearing. loosening the 2 bolts and then wiggle it around until the string lines up on the pinions and driveshaft flanges. If a pic would make that explanation easier I can post one tomorrow

I have cut and pasted my reply to another question along the same lines. Maybe this will make it clear for you.......

I just had the egr valve off of my ga16i engine a few days ago. A simple vacuum pot controlling a cast iron bodied valve. This is how the Chilton book describes it's theory of operation: EGR system is used to reduce combustion temperatures in the engine thereby reducing the oxides of nitrogen emissions and controlling detonation (ping).Recycled exhaust gas is drawn into the intake manifold from the exhaust manifold with the flow controlled by the EGR. As the throttle valve is opened, more vacuum is applied to the egr valve vacuum diaphragm. The diaphragm moves a tapered valve, that allows exhaust gas to pass into the intake manifold.........edit some blah blah blah.......The system does not operate when the engine is idling because the exhaust gas recirculation would cause rough idle at low rpm......Anyway, my engine has an EGR control solenoid. That could be causing your problem (if your engine has one) because it could be telling your EGR to open and when it shouldn't be. Joe
