egr valve help...

I have a 89 fastbackI dont have a check engine light. I recently replace my cataylic converter.

I tried testing my egr valve to see if it works, I started my car, I took out the hose on the egr valve then I pushed the thing up on the bottom of the egr valve. It didnt go down.. and I wanted to know if its just dirty or its ineffective.. and does anyone know how to remove the egr valve step by step?

removing the egr valve is a beezy, just pulled my friends off his 89 240 but reinstalling is much much easier

yoru not supposed to remove any hose while fingering your egr valve.

Is the car running bad? Do you have any leaks in the egr system, like in the tube maybe?.. and that little actuator with the rod you can push up and down is for the secondary butterflies. If it stays closed you'll notice that you won't have any power above like 3000rpm or so. Their not controlled by the egr though, I don't think. I removed all my egr stuff completely and zip-tied the butterfly thing to where it's open all the time. Runs fine.

Crap, it's a single-slammer, I didn't realize till now. I don't know if it's different.. :S

How do you bring the rod back down.? Yeah, I noticed it when i was driving...

I think the only problems ive noticed was egr and my timing....

how did you take the egr valve off?is there a site that has step by step procedures?

I dunno its weird there is no CEL. When I test EGR I just push the diaphragm and see if it dies.

that's exactly what your supposed to do, but your not supposed to be disconnecting hoses not yet at least. If you press the diaphragm while the car is running and the exhaust gas does makes it into the engine and it starts idling low or stumbling then it is not plugged. Other-wise if it doesn't react it, time to clean or replace it.

you also might want to check your BBT valve make sure that's working properly too that controls the vacuum from your engine to the egr valve.

anyways if you want to remove it you gotta squeeze your hand or a tool behind there where the valve is and take the two bolts holding it on im pretty sure there 14mm

Do I remove all these bolts and is theres 2 more on the other side. And theres a fat nut being blocked in pic but i take that out too?

you just said what it is, C.E.L. Check Engine Light

oops so there 4 bolts my bad well if the flat ones keeping it on take it off, if its in your way to remove the valve take it off. if you don't have too dont.also there should be a metal line coming from the header connected to it as well yoru gonna have to take that off as well
